give that a try. good morning, everybody. i'm terrell morning. president obama and speaker john boehner have met trying to hammer out a deal on the fiscal cliff. the discussion was described as frank. the president is apparently holding firm on taxing the wealthy and there are signs of dissension among the republican ranks. susan mcginnis starts us off this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> hi. good morning, terrell. the two men met for less than an hour, and that's not an encouraging sign. neither of them spoke during the meeting but what we heard before and after is neither side is budging on their core decisions, this as time to make a deal grows shorter. house speaker john boehner made the short trip up pennsylvania avenue to the white house thursday to talk to president obama about the fiscal cliff. the tax hikes and spending cuts set to kick in january 1st. they met for nearly an hour. both sides describe the discussion as frank. >> i think speaker boehner has a contentious caucus. >> the president wants to pretend that spending isn't a problem. that's why we don't have an a

but they take comfort knowing there were several heroes who saved so many young lives. president obama praised their courage at a community vigil last night. >> in the face of indescribeable violence, in the face of unconscionable evil, you have looked out for each other. >> reporter: 27-year-old victoria soto died shielding some of her first graders from the bullets. >> she is truly a hero. [ crying ] and it's very likely because of her that our son is with us today. >> reporter: school officials say the surviving students won't have to return to the sandy hook elementary school building anytime soon. they will attend classes at another location. as the grieving continues, efforts are under way to resalvage some semblance of normalcy. we have seen moving vans down this road transferring materials from sandy hook elementary school to the new location where the children will eventually be going back to school. reporting live in newtown, connecticut, i'm randall pinkston. back to you. >> randall, i wanted to ask you in the aftermath of this one of the things that's come up is gun control and the

this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening. president obama today promised what he called real action right now to reduce gun violence after the school massacre in newtown, connecticut. he put vice president biden in charge of a government-wide effort, but gave him only until january to recommend new laws and executive orders. mr. obama pointed to assault rifles like the one used in the sandy hook attack to access to mental health care and to what he called a culture of that glorifies violence. major garrett is at the white house for us tonight. major? >> reporter: scott, gun control has never been an obama administration priority. it is now, and the clock is ticking on vice president joe biden's gun violence task force. mr. obama wants to announce new initiatives before his state of the union address in late january. >> there's no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. we're going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun. we're going to need to look more closely at a cult

including president obama. he is expected to speak shortly. cbs will carry the president's remarks live as they happen. >>> chilling new details about -- are emerging about the deadly rampage in connecticut that left 28 people dead including 20 children. sources say the shooter, adam lanza, shot his mother four times in the head, apparently as she lay sleeping. computers in the home were found smashed. lanza then drove it to the school and forced his way in by shooting out a window. within minutes he shot and killed the children and six adults, and then as police closed in, lanza shot himself. in newtown, it was a day to mourn their dead at church services. cbs is in newtown where president obama is among the mourners. >> reporter: hundreds of mourners at a vigil in new town gave first respond ears standing ovation. president obama is there to help this community deal with the tragedy. people have been stopping at town memorials all day. while others attended sunday services focused on the tragedy that shattered this tight-knit community. residents leaned on one another as they remember

' income over $250,000 was a cornerstone of president obama's re-election campaign. but he's reportedly backing off those demands. in his latest offer to republicans, the president is seeking to raise rates on incomes over $400,000 for couples. his offer also includes a reduction in future cost of living increases for social security recipients. and he's dropping his proposal to extend the payroll tax cut. if that happens paycheck contributions would go from 4.2% to 6.2%, raising $115 billion a year to go to deficit reduction. but the president is holding firm on keeping the eligibility age of medicare at 65. republicans have proposed raising the age to 67. house speaker john boehner didn't speak to reporters as he left the white house monday. last week boehner broke the logjam when he agreed to raise some income tax rates. and while this is the most progress we've seen, there's still a long way to go. speaker boehner's spokesperson says the president's plan does not include enough spending cuts, but he is hopeful talks will continue. terrell, not over yet. >> we'll hopefully get someth
